Christchurch City Council is currently planning an event to commemorate of the second anniversary of the 22 February 2011 Canterbury earthquake.

A memorial service is planned to be held in Latimer Square on Friday 22 February 2013.  Family members of those who were killed, seriously injured survivors, members of the emergency services and the wider community will have the opportunity to gather and remember what we did for one another on that day.

Latimer Square has been selected as the location of the service due to the significance of the Square as the temporary home of many emergency service personnel from home and abroad who responded to the earthquake.

The service will be timed to coincide with the time of the earthquake which was lunchtime at 12.51pm.

Mayor Bob Parker is pleased the commemorative service will focus on the community and hopes Cantabrians will again come together and be there for each other.

“While we experienced tremendous loss on February 22 and many in our community live daily with the effects of that day, we need to take the opportunity to remember the tremendous bravery and support we gave each other on that day,” he says.

As plans are finalised Council will release further details.
