A new study has revealed that 98% of teens have either received a gift card or purchased one as a gift.

Commenting on the new research is Hamilton based Rubio’s Chief Executive Officer  John-Paul Mclean: “This research shows how vitally important it is for businesses to have gift cards in their store. Teenagers are a massive demographic, so businesses cannot afford to miss out on it. Gift cards are now accessible for small to medium sized businesses due to advancements in technology, so the opportunity is there” says Mr Mclean.

The latest research also revealed that apparel and music retailers were the preferred retail categories where teens purchase gift cards (nearly 65 percent of purchases).

Retailers selling electronics and books, restaurants, video rental chains and movie theatres were reported as the next most frequented places for teens to buy gift cards for friends and family.

According to the online survey, teens appear to be generous: almost two-thirds of teens spend up to 10 percent of their disposable income on gifts. And they like gift cards. “The majority of teens saw the cards as a gift of first choice, not a fall-back item if nothing else could be found,” says Mr Mclean.

Like adults surveyed, presentation matters, with more than half of teen respondents indicating that the appearance and having a choice of gift card designs is important in their purchase decision. “So having your logo branded across the card is great tool for marketing and branding,” adds Mr Mclean.
