Majority of Seeds Easily Through At Badminton Open

It was business as usual for the majority of seeds in the opening rounds of the 2009 North Harbour Badminton Open. Only the highly regarded Waikato player, Michael Fowke failed to make the quarterfinals of singles. Fowke, a runner up in the New Zealand U23 champs last month was defeated 23-21 in the third game of his second round match by North Harbour’s Daniel Forrest. Meanwhile men’s top seed Bjorn Seguin(Waikato) and second seed James Eunson(Southland) both had straight games wins into the quarters.

 

Seguin faces Auckland’s Anush Pandian for a place in the semis while Eunson takes on Waikato’s Reon Mcfarlane.

 

In the women’s singles top seed Clare Chapple cruised into the quarters with a victory over North Harbour Melissa Yin and will play Joyce Chiang(Waikato) with a potential semifinal clash against Jessica Jonggowisastro.

 

Second seed Anna Rankin of Southland plays Susannah Leydon-Davis(Waikato) in her quarterfinal.

 

Full rounds of singles, doubles and mixed will take play through to the semifinal stages on Saturday morning with finals from 5pm on Saturday at the North Harbour Badminton Centre. Former World Champs bronze medallist and multiple Commonwealth Games medallist, Dan Shirley will compete in the men’s doubles and the mixed.
