A sounder basis for decision-making is one of the expected benefits from a decision to report, each month, on a consistent set of statistical indicators related to crime and associated police activity.

Police today announced a series of indicators based on the month of June 2010, with comparisons for the same month last year. The indicators, to be reported monthly, are at a National, Police District and Police Area level.

Assistant Commissioner Grant Nicholls said the indicators would provide a 'snapshot' of crime and associated preventative activities during the month.

"These comprise a range of Police activities aimed at reducing crime, offences typically reported to Police and those more usually discovered by Police."

The indicators to be reported on monthly include such things as burglary, robbery, drug offences, disorder, assaults on Police and bail checks.

Assistant Commissioner Nicholls said the monthly indicators will complement the existing Police crime statistics, rather than replace them.

"Currently official crime statistics are published every six months, on 1 April and 1 October, and a summary of Police activities is also published in the Annual Report.

"Reporting statistical indicators monthly will allow us to more regularly provide information on topical crimes, and will serve as a springboard for national and local conversations about policing, and the importance of preventative work," Assistant Commissioner Nicholls says.
