The Palms Shopping Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, provided entertainment to shoppers in a New Zealand first. The centre’s outdoor car park was set up as a massive motocross area, with top motocross riders from around the world wowing the crowds.

Watching motorbikes fly high in the sky while riders attempt back-flips was a sure-fire way to get hearts pumping in the crowd!

The three demonstrations held at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, featured riders Luke Smith, Matty Lewis, Callum Shaw, Joe McNaughton and Stacy Rush. The event was designed to be watched over the duration of the demonstrations. The first session introduced riders, the next featured a friendly competition between riders and the final was an all-out battle as the riders give it their all.

The idea came to organiser Dave Hunter as he was sitting with some friends (and fellow motocross riders) at The Palms’ Fox & Ferrett. One of them commented how cool it would be to do a motocross show at the mall and the idea grew from there.

The Palms Shopping Centre Manager, Simon Carter, was immediately taken by the concept when approached by Dave.

“This was the first time The Palms has held a motocross event and as far as we know, the first time a shopping centre has put on a display like this. The talent on offer was second to none – it was fantastic the community was able to experience the thrills of an extreme motocross demonstration first hand,” he says.
