Watts and Hughes Construction BOP has won the tender to construct the new Tairua Library with construction anticipated to begin prior to Christmas.

The 236sq m single storey Tairua Library – designed by ASC Architects Limited - will be built next to the campground on Manaia Rd and encompass a reception area, work room, reading area, children’s area, meeting room, computer room, storage room and toilets.

Tairua-Pauanui Area Manager Sam Marshall that while there have been delays the project is now significantly closer to reality with the Council awarding the construction contract. Construction is expected to take a minimum of 18 weeks.

There has been informal discussion with Tairua’s main street retailers about access to car parking behind the library. The council proposes to widen the service lane off Manaia Rd to 6m and create a one-way route linking up to Tokoroa Rd, with car parking provided for the library and shops.

Project Manager Peter Barrett says the landscaping at the front of the building will feature a paved courtyard area with raised planting beds of native plants and palms, with access stairs and a ramp providing wheelchair access to the raised level of the library floor from the library car park and Manaia Road.

Discussions have been held with neighbouring retailers to confirm that full disabled standard access will be provided at both the front and rear of the library to avoid the need for pedestrians to use the adjoining service lane.
