Christchurch travellers’ growing interest in more ambitious long-haul trips has seen a local travel agency nab a national award.

House of Travel Northlands in Christchurch has picked up the prize of Top Performing Large-Sized Outlet of the year.

Store owner Cheryl Whitham says she couldn’t be happier to have the team’s winning plaque proudly perched at the store.

“Clients can’t help but comment on our shiny new addition, and we’re beaming with pride. This award encourages us to continue delivering a committed and passionate service,” she says.

Local hardship has meant more people are wanting to escaping reality, and take some time out to treat themselves to a trip overseas, says Whitham.

“People are no longer saving their money for a rainy day, because the rainy day is here,” she says.

While Australia and the South Pacific are still very popular for weekend getaways and winter breaks, the number of clients spending more to take more luxury holidays to the likes of Europe, Asia and America has increased, Whitham says.

“Long haul trips are generally on the rise as the strong NZ dollar means fantastic value for money, which is excellent when buying at your destination.”

The CEO for House of Travel, Mark O'Donnell, is thrilled to see the Christchurch store making its mark.

“It’s fantastic that locals are turning to their team at House of Travel Northlands when it comes to seeking the top quality advice from well-travelled individuals. This national success is a nod to how our Kiwi-owned company is committed to investing in the success of its locals’ travel experiences.”

The team at House of Travel Northlands were given their prestigious award at the company’s annual prize-giving in Auckland on April 13.
