LATEST: One person is dead and several offenders have been put into custody after a early morning shooting in New Plymouth today.

Adam Te Rata Charles Morehu, 33, was shot dead after fleeing the New Plymouth Golf Club following a break in.

Police and the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) were notified of multiple security alarm activations at the New Plymouth Golf Club, in the suburb of Fitzroy, at about 4am.

Officers arrived at the scene and identified that the club house windows had been smashed and set up a cordon around the area.

Meanwhile, one of the officers located the two offenders leaving the scene on a motorbike.

Acting District Commander Inspector Mark Harrison said he could confirm the offenders crashed their bike on the golf course as they tried to leave.

A police dog was deployed and detained one of the offenders.

"An officer went to assist the dog with the first offender and during this time the second offender yelled threats and shot at the officers which led to police discharging a firearm," he said.

The scene has been cordoned off and is likely to remain so for a day or two so that a full scene examination can be completed.

Full statements will be taken from witnesses over the coming days.

Three separate investigations into the incident will be undertaken by police, including looking at the actions of the officers.

"Once again this is a matter of course when there has been police shooting," said Harrison.
