North Island residents are being told to prepare for the worst after another earthquake struck near Wellington this morning.

"It was terrible. Cats were jumping up and down. Pots and pans fell on to the ground. Total hell" A Taranaki woman tells us about the torment after a magnitude 5.8 rocked the North Island at 7.17am.

The 5.8 magnitude quake rocked 30km east of Seddon at a depth of 19km.

This follows after a severe magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck just days ago near Wellington causing screams to be heard around the capital.

Following the 5.7 quake scientists that infonews.co.nz spoke to said that another one was on the way and they have now told us to "prepare for the worst"

and what they said has came true another one hit same spot as last time.

"This is a big reminder to be prepared and get everything you need ready" he told us today.

"A big one is bound to hit over the next few weeks"

"Just be ready" he said.

TARANAKI WOMAN TORMENTED

A Taranaki woman has been tormented waking up to what she thought was a truck colliding with her house.

She told infonews.co.nz "I am just frightened. I was in the Christchurch quake and I feel every earthquake. Sometimes I get just hours sleep."

"This morning and the 5.7 quake was a big reminder to be ready" she said.

Numerous earthquakes have struck all over New Zealand over the past few days and residents of Wellington are saying that atleast they get warnings.

"We get warnings, yes. Because when a big quake hits generally a smaller but felt quake occurs just miniutes before hand."

The residents that told us that want to remain unidentified however they are correct, before all of the severe or strong quakes this week a smaller quake ranging 4-4.5 magnitude has struck, same spot, same depth.

Geonet duty seismologist Dr Anna Kaiser said it's expected they would continue.

"It's quite common to get a shock reaching about four (on the richter scale) before a larger one, like we had before the 5.8 this morning.

There have been over 30 earthquakes in the same area in total so far this morning with the latest bigger ones being 4.5 magnitude aftershock at 9.28am and a 5.1 at 10.55am.

Tranz Metro has advised all its services in Wellington have been delayed. Services on the Wairarapa and Johnsonville rail lines have been replaced by buses while track inspections are undertaken.

There were reports of small damage in Wellington up to Taranaki after todays quake.

The quake was felt from the bottem of the South Island up north to Auckland.
