A Hamiltonian born and bred, Adrienne is new to local politics. Her long teaching career stands her in good stead to represent people from all walks of life.

“I stand for common-sense, for equity and for credibility. I am an excellent communicator and am prepared to advocate for community groups who have an interest in receiving support from Hamilton City Council,” says Adrienne Hagan.

“I will do what I can to represent the people of Hamilton in governing our city,” says Adrienne.

Adrienne was born in Fairfield and lived there for 17 years before moving with her parents, Tom and Pauline Burr, to Sandwich Road in Bryant Park. She attended Hamilton Girls’ High School.

She studied at Waikato University, where she gained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours in English), Politics and History; followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism at Canterbury University.

In 1988 she worked as a sub editor at the New Zealand Press Association in Wellington on the overseas and finance desks, before moving to Tauranga where she worked as a Health and Education reporter at the Bay of Plenty Times.

Travelling the world, through China, Tibet, Nepal and India; made her realise what we have at home, here in New Zealand. After a year in London, she came back to Hamilton city.

“Hamilton is a vibrant, accessible city. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else,” says Adrienne.

After raising three boys in Hamilton, she is ready to give something back to the city she loves.

For the past 7 years, she has been working as a Drama, Media Studies and English teacher at Te Aroha College. Because of work commitments, she has lived in Te Aroha for two years, but is now in the process of moving back to Hamilton.

“I’ve recently been elected to the Te Aroha College Board of Trustees as the staff representative, where I am sitting on the Finance, Policy and Property committees. I’m really looking forward to the challenges that the governance of a school presents,” says Adrienne.

“This new challenge made me realize that life as a councillor representing the people of Hamilton in local affairs would also be hugely interesting and worthwhile,” says Adrienne.

Adrienne sees herself as a person who can make a difference to Hamilton city. “It takes good people to put up their hand and step forward to debate the issues that are important to the running of a vibrant, multicultural city.”
