I Can Doosit Scoops Champion Trotter Award

I Can Doosit has added another award to the trophy cabinet of his owners, Ken and Karen Breckon.

I Can Doosit was named North Island Trotter Of The Year at the North Island harness racing awards function held at Alexandra Park on Saturday night.

I Can Doosit is currently on the comeback trail after a serious injury which curtailed his racing career and is about to join the Purdons stable to commence light work in the hope of a return to the racetrack.

In the absence of the Breckons, the award was accepted by Phillip Quay of MediaPA which has been establishing a new web site and social media for Breckon Farms.

I Can Doosit’s award win was remarkable considering he raced for only half the season.

He looked unbeatable when he annihilated his opposition during cup week at Addington last November, taking the Dominion Handicap then the NZ Free-for-all, when he smashed the New Zealand record by 4.2 seconds after sitting parked for almost the entire trip.

But his winning streak of 17 stopped at 18 on Christmas Eve when he trotted terribly when beaten into fourth by Stig in the Flying Mile at Cambridge.

After two more seconds, when I Can Doosit was obviously unhappy, trainer Mark Purdon pulled the pin on his Australian campaign and sent him for extensive veterinary tests which revealed not only bone chips in a fetlock but substantial damage to the cartilage and bruising to the bone.

Ken Breckon approved state of the art stem cell surgery to promote healing in the joint and Breckon says the prognosis is now reasonably good.

''His career is going to have to be limited because of the damage but hopefully he'll still get to compete in the big races.

''He will come back into work this month but won't race until February. We will target the Group One races and chase the big Australian money, like the Melbourne circuit. And I'd love him to come back for another crack at the Rowe Cup (which he has won the last two years), “ Ken Breckon said.
