The Turangi Library is being upgraded and extended and features a new innovative design. The renovation will provide a more user-friendly space and additional services including improved research and technology facilities and more recreation and reading areas to better accommodate the requirements of the Turangi Community.

The original library was housed by a 40 year old building which has proven to be an interesting challenge for the construction team, who have had to push the completion date back by six weeks.

Council’s Project Manager John Ridd said that there have been unforeseen costs as works have progressed at the Turangi Library, resulting in a cost overrun of around 5% ($60,000).

“To compensate for the extra expenditure we are looking at ways to make savings without prejudicing the aesthetics or vision we have planned for the new library,” he said.

Turangi-Tongariro Community Board Chairman Don Ormsby said “The board is disappointed by the minor setbacks that the library has seen and it’s a pity it wasn’t finished by Christmas, but now that it is full steam ahead we are more than happy with the progress.”

Construction is well underway and Turangi residents can expect to be enjoying the new facility by mid-February.
