More opportunities for Women in Blue
Police Commissioner Mike Bush recently announced the launch of a number of initiatives to attract more women into the New Zealand Police, recognising the shortage of women on the force and in senior positions.
Mr Bush said it was a priority for New Zealand Police to recruit more women and develop leaders in order to be representative of the community. “We’re looking for new young leaders with communication skills, empathy and problem solving abilities. These skills are crucial to prevent crime and victimisation.”
Initiatives include a local reality TV show featuring women officers in diverse roles (called Women in Blue), a recruitment drive and a Police Women’s Advisory Network.
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic are providing opportunities for local women to join the Women in Blue through their popular Preparation for Law Enforcement programme.
Sam Honey, Programme Co-ordinator and a former policewoman herself, encourages other women to enter the diverse world of policing.
“No two days are ever the same,” says Sam. “And it’s true what they say – you certainly have better work stories!”
“The Polytechnic course is aimed at anyone seriously thinking about joining the Police or other areas of law enforcement. It’s not just for guys; there are lots of opportunities for women too.”
As well as numeracy and literacy, the Certificate in Preparation for Law Enforcement programme covers key skills such as defensive driving, communications, assertiveness, first aid, computing, law, swimming and fitness.
Supported by the New Zealand Police the course is taught in both Tauranga and Hamilton. Limited places are still available for the May and September intakes. Contact Bay of Plenty Polytechnic for more information boppoly.ac.nz or 0800 BOPPOLY.
