Sections of the Victoria Esplanade walkway could be affected when work on laying a new water main from Dittmer Drive to Fitzherbert Avenue begins next week.

The City Council has completed the stage from Ferguson Street to Dittmer Drive and the final section, which will connect the main to the major pipe from the reservoir to the city, is scheduled from December through to April 2008.

The water main will run parallel with the walkway however at times it will cross over causing the Council to close a small section during the course of the work.

Project Engineer, Chye Goh, says when that occurs the Council will erect large signs at each end of the closure to explain the project and direct users around the affected area.

The closure will only be for several days at a time to enable to work to be carried out and the walkway reinstated.

The first closure will take place next week when the Council begins the project at Dittmer Drive.

The purpose of the new water main is to reduce the incidents of discoloration and provide a consistency of water pressure.
