Wellington Phoenix players will wear black armbands during tomorrow night’s match against Perth Glory in memory of a fan who died on his way home from watching the Phoenix-LA Galaxy football match.

Michael Webby, 29, slipped on a greasy path and fell 20m down a steep bank early Sunday morning as he made his way home to his Kelburn flat after watching the game at Westpac Stadium.

Wellington Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the death of Mr Webby was a terrible tragedy.

“Our deepest condolences and sincerest sympathies go to Michael’s family and loved ones. It is only a small gesture but everyone here at the club wanted to wear black armbands on Friday night to pay tribute to Michael.”
