South Island

Tuesday 24 April 2007
Colin had some sleep on the short helicopter ride over Cook Strait.
He then rode to the Picton Ferry terminal to meet up with the support
campervan and all headed for Blenheim. A road-side lay-by was used to give
Colin a 1 ½ hour sleep break.
All through the North Island, Colin had been craving his favourite endurance
food: KFC potatoes and gravy and coleslaw – at long last he had the chance –
how he enjoyed that!
Colin continued south through Clarence to Kaikoura, where he dossed down in
the van for another 1 1/2 hours sleep. This brought his total sleep time to a
mere 6 hours 10 minutes since leaving Cape Reinga at 6am on Sunday 22 April.

Wednesday 25 April 2007 ANZAC day
Cycling through the night, the cold started to get to Colin at Cheviot. At
5.30am he put on extra warm clothing and added his postie jacket! After the
cold night, the team gave him a stop at Waipara for some rest and hot food.
Just after Amberley the campervan was pulled over by the police with a request
to pull over and let trucks pass. Well we thought we were well practised as
this already… A photo was taken for the record, but the drivers drew the line
at asking the police for a donation.

Soon after 1,415 km was recorded. Colin was entering unknown territory as the
longest endurance ride previously done was the Boston-Montreal-Boston ride of
1200km. Incredibly, Colin was feeling better at this point than when he
finished the Boston ride.

Another rest was taken in Christchurch courtesy of the ‘219 on Johns’ Motel,
for a rest. The motel donated the stop free of charge. This true Southern
Hospitality is much appreciated.

By 4.15 pm Colin had reached 1530km. He was wearing his Boston cycling top
and going well, still cheerful and cheeky to the support crew. Cars are
stopping and giving money for Heart children. C’mon NZ lets get to Colin’s
fundraising target – see the website below.

At Ashburton (5.15pm) Colin took a small rest, and then pedaled on to Timaru.
His total sleep time still only 61/2 hours. The weather took a turn for the
worse, with rain through the night.

Thursday 26 April 2007
At time of this report Colin is 20km away from Dunedin. To meet his cycling
goal he will need to reach Balclutha by 3pm today. Here he will have a sleep
and feed and then the big push: 160 km to Bluff by 1am Friday morning.
