First of all don't flush parts of meals, cotton balls, swabs, hair or cleansing wipes down a toilet. “They don't dissolve and will cause clogs. Place a waste basket in the bathroom, so these items won't be flushed,” advises Bruce Trenwith from BT Plumbing and Gas Ltd.

If you have got the relatives over this Christmas “it's a good idea to wait 10 minutes between showers, so slow drains have time to do their job,’’ advises Bruce.

In the kitchen avoid putting fibrous, chewy or starchy waste in the garbage disposal such as celery, fruit and potato peels cannot be sufficiently broken down. Also make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. “Run lots of water as you use the disposal and keep the water running for a short time after you turn it off,” says Bruce.
