Summer is disappearing in the rear view mirror and winter is around the next corner.

Hopefully your car’s air-conditioning system did its job during the hot months and kept you and your loved ones cruising at a comfortable temperature.

However, don’t turn your back on your car’s air-con just because winter’s arriving.

Catherine Tocker from Hamilton’s CoolCar Air-Conditioning Centre says it’s important for your health and safety, as well as the health of your air-conditioning system, to keep it serviced and running throughout the year.

“A lot of people turn the air-con off in the winter time because they think you don’t need it because it’s just for cold air,”  says Catherine, “but actually the first thing the air-con does is dry the air so it makes it perfect for keeping your car warm in the winter time.

“That air goes over the heater core and comes out the vents and it’s dry.  When you get that dry, warm air hitting the windscreen, you don’t get condensation forming like you would if you didn’t have the AC on.  You get clear driving visibility.”

As Catherine explains, keeping the air-con running is not just for your own safety and comfort, it’s also important for the upkeep of the system.

“It’s good for the air conditioning because it keeps it alive,” she says.  “It’s more likely to develop a leak somewhere if the seals aren’t kept lubricated.

“On the internet the advice is you should use it for a minimum of five minutes a week but we would suggest just turn it on and leave it on.  Some people think it’s going to be more likely to break down if it’s left on but it actually makes it less likely”.

Catherine suggests getting your car’s air-conditioning system checked annually by an expert, just as you would have your teeth checked at the dentist.

“Just to give it the once-over to pick up any little leaks and fix them while they’re small and before they’ve caused any damage,” she says.
