It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

The story of the Hamilton housing market in 2016 has some similarities to the Charles Dickens stories of 1859.

It’s certainly the best of times for buyers from Auckland, who are reportedly flocking like rats down the Waikato Expressway to snap up Hamilton properties.

Meanwhile, the housing market in Hamilton is booming and prices are higher than many people can afford.  For many Hamilton families, especially first home buyers, it seems like this might be the worst of times.

However, Jono Ng of Lugton’s Real Estate is urging Hamilton buyers to stay optimistic.  He says this trend should not be seen as a negative and there are advantages for everyone in the way the market has turned.

“This is actually a positive story,” says Jono.  “A growing city is always good.  If you think about it, a flourishing city has advantages for everyone who lives there.”

Jono says he understands people can feel overwhelmed when trying to buy a home in a booming market but if you stand back and look at the big picture it is possible to get what you need.

“That’s what your agent is for,” says Jono.  “People might not know all the options that are available to them.”

“I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re going to be left out of the market.  I’m always happy to sit down and talk with clients so we can come up with a plan to meet their individual needs.”

Jono says people shouldn’t be discouraged by Aucklanders buying in Hamilton as it’s a normal and expected trend.

“This trend towards Aucklanders looking for properties in Hamilton has been here since this time last year,” he says.  “Auckland buyers' main focus is on income generating properties. As long as the return is positive then they will consider buying.”

Jono says people need not be discouraged by this, rather embrace it as a positive for Hamilton City and keep looking for the home that makes them happy.
