A record more than two million attendances have been recorded at Christchurch City Council-owned leisure centres, pools and recreation facilities in the six months to end of December 2006.

"This attendance is higher than in 2005-06, which was also a record year," says Council Recreation and Sports Manager John Filsell.

"To 30 December 2006, 2,005,148 attendances were recorded at our leisure centres and pools, despite facility closures and both a poor spring and start to summer."

Attendances at outdoor pools for the same period are down on average by 35 per cent. He says this reflects a national trend.

In the 2005-06 financial year, there were a record 4.1 million visits to Council-operated pools, leisure centres and recreation facilities.

"This figure is equal to every resident visiting these facilities at least 10 times throughout the year, helping contribute to a healthy, active city," he says.

"2005-06 an incredible result, being more than 900,000 visits above the previous year. Six months in to the 2006-07 financial year attendances are already higher than for the same time last year."

Mr Filsell says this is a very good outcome. "It shows that Council is encouraging Christchurch to be a more physically active community by providing its residents with world-class aquatic and recreation facilities.

"We can only expect these numbers to continue to rise with the Aquatic Facilities Plan. This will see four new facilities built during the next 13 years to provide a city-wide network of facilities and year-round access to recreational aquatic activities."

He says it is also pleasing that customer satisfaction remains at the highest level when benchmarked against other facilities in Australasia.
