Suncourt Hotel and Conference Centre went off with a bang on Saturday night when local fertiliser business, Uptake, treated around 100 of their clients and associates to a Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner, crackers and all.

Uptake has been operating from Taupo since 1984.  Experts in soil, plant and animal nutrition, Uptake specialises in tailoring eco-friendly nutrient supplementation to the individual needs of farmers.

In a night packed with laughter, music, feasting and drinking, Uptake’s CEO John Davis delivered a moving speech, thanking and celebrating his guests, some of whom have been clients since the company first started 30 years ago.

“I am proud of the stand you have taken to use Uptake,” Mr Davis told the attendees, “especially when our competitors said you have been doing the wrong thing and going against tradition and accepted fertiliser practice.”

“Now the market wants natural products from a soil-nutrient, enriched pasture-feeding system.  Uptake has provided you with a plan of action and thankfully you hung in there, because you now produce just what the market wants.”

Other speakers included retired rescue helicopter stalwart John Funnell, who enthralled the audience with a retelling of one of his most daring rescue missions, a 1992 emergency flight to Campbell Island to rescue a shark attack victim.

Everyone was surprised when Taihape deer, sheep and beef farmer Andrew Peters, cutting a striking figure in a kilt and sporran, serenaded the room with some rousing Scottish music on his trusty set of bagpipes.

MC for the night was Phillip Quay from MediaPA, wearing a tailored suit and matching accessories by Hamilton men’s fashion line ELVION.

After a nourishing dinner and dessert, Bill Ward and his band from Te Aroha covered old favourites like Mustang Sally and Rawhide, much to the delight of the rural guests.

"Tonight, let’s celebrate the occasion and drink to our own good health,” John Davis had toasted at the end of his speech.

The crowd took their cue and kept the bar pumping and dance floor pulsating well into the night.
