Wellington  Phoenix FC is set to record another significant milestone in its short history, with Friday night’s home match against the Queensland Roar likely to see the 100,000th fan pass through the turnstiles at Westpac Stadium.

The Phoenix need just 6839 fans to attend Friday night’s match to crack the 100,000-mark, with 93,161 people having attended the Phoenix’s eight home games to date.

The Hyundai A-League’s newest club has an average crowd figure of 11,645.

The figures stack up impressively against the Hyundai A-League’s seven foundation clubs, putting the Phoenix well ahead of the Perth Glory (59,298 total, 7412 average for eight home games) and the Central Coast Mariners (62,095 total, 10,349 average for six home games) and on a par with attendances recorded by Adelaide United and the Newcastle Jets.

In addition, the Phoenix’s season-high home attendance to date of 18,345 (v Adelaide United in round 15) is the third highest figure for any club in a single match, behind only Sydney FC (18,457) and the Melbourne Victory (31,884).

Wellington Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the 100,000-fan milestone was a significant achievement for the club.

“I think we’ve exceeded expectations in terms of the support we’ve had and everyone at the club would like to thank to fans that have come to our games – it’s just been sensational.

“To be on the verge of breaking the 100,000-mark with one more home game to come (against Sydney FC at 7.30pm on Friday, January 4) is phenomenal, and I know that Football Federation Australia is thrilled with what we’ve achieved this year.”
