That’s the philosophy driving the team at Voltex, New Zealand’s leading manufacturer of electrical equipment and accessories.

Voltex’s headquarters in Hamilton has a leading-edge, open-plan environment which encourages interaction between staff and celebrates camaraderie.

As Duncan Gibbs, founder of Voltex knows, workplace culture has an impact on productivity, morale and ultimately, sales.

“We’ve got a family feel to the whole business,” says Denys Gibbs, “which really makes a difference.  Everyone who works here feels like they are a part of the business and are part of the family.”

Voltex has come up with various ways to amp up the workplace, including bean bags, a ping-pong table and a productivity meter where the team can see the results of their efforts displayed on a large screen.

A joyful-sounding horn blasts from a glass-partitioned office as goals set by the team are reached through the day.  The sound turns out to be an old fashioned hand-held rubber car horn, being operated by Duncan Gibbs, Voltex’s managing director.

“Our underlying goal is to maintain an empowering and inspirational workplace where people can feel free to be creative, take risks and just be a little weird,” says Duncan. 

It’s definitely working, as the team at Voltex is enjoying the culture of their workplace and the results speak for themselves.

“We do have a wonderful team at Voltex,” says Duncan.  “However, it’s not just about us.  We have our customers to thank for our success. 

“Without our valued customers, we wouldn’t be here.”
