The Green Party is urging New Zealanders to get their fingers walking for climate change.

“The United Nations’ International Panel on Climate Change meeting in Bali is close to getting developed countries to sign up to a plan for a binding agreement on targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is vital if we are going to do anything about climate change,” Climate Change Spokesperson Jeanette Fitzsimons says.

“However, this step is being blocked by three nations – Canada, the United States of America and Japan.

“The opposition from these three countries is likely to scuttle any hope of including binding emission reduction targets into any road map for future talks on climate change.

“Climate change is not something that will affect just a few countries. It will affect us all and we all have to pull together, put aside politics, and get on with doing everything we can to reduce its impact.

The Green Party is calling on New Zealanders to show their displeasure at the tactics being used by Canada, the US and Japan.

“We would like every New Zealander to send off an email to the local embassies and consulates in New Zealand asking them to pass on to their Governments the message from New Zealand to just get on with it.

The addresses are:

US Embassy:

Canadian High Commission

Embassy of Japan
