The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit North Canterbury on November 14 caused widespread damage, particularly in Kaikoura.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by last week’s quake,” BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says.

“It’s a stark reminder that anywhere in New Zealand - even Auckland - could be hit by a similar event at any time. It pays to be prepared.”

BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says that while assembling an emergency survival kit should be a priority, homeowners can also do things to reduce the chance of serious plumbing damage.

“Even a light shake can cause hot water cylinders to rock enough to crack pipes, potentially causing costly damage.”

Here are three tips that will help to minimise damage in an earthquake.

Secure your cylinder: The best method of doing this is by using wooden blocks and a metal strap which can be bought as part of a kit from plumbing supply stores. This will help to prevent your cylinder from sliding and shaking and help to secure your precious water supply.
Install flexible fittings: Having flexible gas and plumbing fittings installed between your house and ground allows for the extra movement during an earthquake and helps to prevent breaks and leakages. Make sure you get a qualified tradesperson to do the work for you.
Learn where the mains are: It’s a good idea to show each family member how and when to turn off the water and gas at the mains switches. This can help to prevent water leaks if an earthquake damages pipes. If you smell
gas, you’ll want to turn it off at the mains.

The trusted team at BT Plumbing & Gas Ltd says there is no way to entirely “earthquake-proof” a home, but people can take simple precautions to be more prepared.

“If you would like more advice about what you can do to secure the plumbing and gas in your home, give us a call today. We’re always happy to help.”
