Easy Move Furniture Removals are the Auckland moving company to contact when moving this summer, and they have some very helpful advice on moving garden and pot plants. With all the stress of moving, our plants are one  of the last things we think about when moving house, as we have so many other things to think about and, to be truthful, plants are often just shoved in the back of the moving truck at the last minute. Even if they survive the move the trauma of the process can kill them off later!

For those of us who are very fond of our plants it’s therefore wise to put some time and effort into making the moving process as quick and painless for them as possible. Easy Move Furniture Removals’ team advise that plants may not be covered in their insurance policy as they are just too easy to damage, so people need to take care of this side of things themselves.

The team at Easy Move team recommend getting hold of some sturdy boxes and line these with plastic ready for moving day. People should then assess all plants a couple of weeks before the move. They should be pruned, fed and watered and, in the case of pot plants, their pots inspected for any cracks or damage that would be exacerbated by being transported. On the day before moving day place the pot plants into the boxes which have been set aside for this purpose, with packing in place to hold them firmly.

For moving garden plants, the best time to dig them up is on moving day, as this minimises disruption. Plants should be dug up with a ‘root ball’ at the base which can then be wrapped in plastic, and larger climbing plants should have a support for their stem.

Once in the new location, garden plants can be kept in large buckets or a quick hole in the new garden until there is time to re-plant them properly. Houseplants don’t have such urgent needs as they will still be in their pots, but can be taken out of their boxes and wrappings and taken care of in the normal manner until there is time to arrange them in the house or on the deck.
