Franklin District Council and local Police are setting up an action plan to tackle antisocial and dangerous behaviour at Karioitahi beach. The new year will see a greater Council and Police presence at the beach to ensure it remains safe for all visitors.

Recent events of violence and drunkenness at the beach led to Mayor Mark Ball, Council Officers and the Police meeting to discuss how to increase safety at Karioitahi.

“One action that the community is likely to notice immediately is an increased Police presence. If you are thinking of coming to Karioitahi to make trouble, it would be better to stay home,” says Police Senior Sergeant Rob Arnold.

Council already has several Bylaws that relate to keeping the beach safe including the Beach Control Bylaw, Public Places Bylaw, Liquor Control Bylaw and Traffic Control Bylaw. Council Officers and Elected Members have been discussing with Police how to best utilise these tools.

“Strongly enforced Bylaws are a powerful tool to tackle alcohol abuse, reckless driving, speed and the misuse of vehicles in certain locations. Council is committed to ensuring that our Bylaws are enforced and we will be taking steps to ensure everyone knows about them and faces consequences if they don’t follow them,” says Franklin District Council CEO, Sally Davis.

Council will also review its Liquor Control Bylaw early in 2008 with a view to increasing the hours that liquor consumption at the beach is banned.

Council would like to hear from you in the new year if you have any other ideas for helping to make Karioitahi a safe beach for all. Contact Franklin District Council Parks Officer, Greg Lowe, at Council (after 3rd January 2008) on (09) 237 1355.
