Parking Concession for Older People Under Way
Periods of free parking in New Plymouth’s CBD for older people has been approved by New Plymouth District Council.
From today (Thursday) SuperGold Card holders will be able to park at metered spaces and NPDC pay and display areas in the CBD for free until 11am from Monday to Saturday.
Normal parking regulations apply in time-limited and disabled parking spaces, loading zones and bus stops. The parking concession does not include leased parking spaces.
The scheme has been promoted by New Plymouth Positive Ageing Trust and Mayor Peter Tennent.
Says Mayor Pete: “I’m thrilled we could get this into place before Christmas.
“This system gives something back to people aged over 65, and recognises the contribution they have made and continue to make in our community.
“The concession scheme will also help CBD businesses by promoting early-morning shopping, and will free up parking spaces during the peak hours of the day.”
The scheme is being trialled for 12 months to monitor its usage and impact.
