Budding triathletes have the chance to mark Saint Patrick’s Day a little differently this year by competing in the eighth event in the Contact Energy National Triathlon Series, at Whangamata.

Triathlon New Zealand is urging competitors to get their registrations in now for the Whangamata race, which will take place on Saturday 17 March.

Triathlon New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Dave Beeche, said the National Triathlon Series is New Zealand’s only national series of events for the nation’s fastest growing sport – triathlon. Events so far have been held in New Plymouth, Auckland, Nelson, Christchurch, Rotorua, Kinloch and Napier, seeing more than 1000 competitors taking to the start line.

“The inaugural National Series, sponsored by Contact Energy, gives all New Zealanders over the age of 13 the opportunity to take part in a triathlon regardless of their age, ability or location,” Dave said.

“Many triathlon events are targeted at specific age groups or are only run in the main centres whereas the National Series spans the length and breadth of New Zealand.”

Race Director Richard Sceats said Whangamata will host two races, with the feature event of the day being the Contact Energy New Zealand Cup race. As well as being part of the nine race national series, the Contact Energy New Zealand Cup race will also be the 2007 University Triathlon Championships.

“The Contact Energy New Zealand Cup race is a medium to advanced level competition open to anyone over the age of 18, and includes a 1500m ocean sea swim, a 40km out and back hilly cycle leg and a 10km two-lap run course. “Participants in this race will compete for prizes and also accumulate points, with the Contact Energy New Zealand Cup being awarded to the major point holder at the completion of the series.”

Richard said the day will also feature the Tri My Sport participation race which caters to the first time competitor, and features a 500 metre ocean swim, a 16 kilometre out and back cycle leg and a five kilometre run.

“The Whangamata race is set to be a great day- it’s a fantastic opportunity to enter a race before the end of the summer.” The National Series comprises nine events, which are being held over the summer months from November 2006 to March 2007.

Leading the points in the series so far is Auckland athlete Tristan Calwell, and Christchurch’s Gina Ferguson. The series will conclude in Wellington on 31 March.
