Save Water Where You Can, So It’s There When It Counts!
Franklin District Council has the information you need to make sure every drop of water you use, counts. This summer has already been dry and the community is talking about how to get through the summer without water use restrictions seen in other districts – or a dried up veggie patch!
“Using less water, more effectively, can benefit all without too much individual effort or cost. Good water saving techniques have been introduced by the community already and we want to encourage people to continue and extend these,” says Franklin District Council’s Water and Wastewater Asset Manager, Robert Workman.
To help spread the word about smart water use Council produces a “Water Saving Plan” brochure that is available at Council’s Service Centres in Pukekohe, Tuakau and Waiuku. The information is also available on Council’s website. Council will continue to send the brochure out with water bills until the dry summer weather breaks, so if you are expecting your bill to arrive in the next few months keep an eye out for it.
“The ‘Water Saving Plan’ is a guide to help you save water and money – not just during summer but all year round. It includes advice on how to monitor your water meter and tips for saving water inside and outside the home. If you want to reduce your water use this brochure is for you,” says Robert.
Some of the tips included are:
Don’t run the tap while you brush your teeth.
Put cold water into a jug and boil it to get hot water. This means there is no water wastage while you run the tap and wait for the water to get hot.
Water the garden in the early morning or evening to avoid losing water by evaporation.
Use as much mulch and compost as possible as a great way to retain moisture.

Council also undertakes an acoustic leak detection survey each year to locate underground, unnoticeable leaks and replaces ageing pipes in the supply network.
