SANSON residents are being advised to boil water for drinking purposes until further notice.

A “Boiled Water Notice” is being issued to all residents by the Manawatu District Council as a precaution against possible bacteriological contamination to the town’s water supply.

Water Manager, Wayne Spencer, said water should be boiled for at least three minutes until water sample results showed the water to be safe.

The move follows the installation of a temporary water intake near the Rangitikei River following the failure of the town’s normal water supply bore last week.

“The bed level in the river has lowered to a point that the groundwater level is now below the water intake height,” said Mr Spencer.

He said the temporary intake would be operational for about two weeks while a new permanent bore was constructed.

The 200 consumers on the town supply have been asked to conserve water and use it only on household essentials.

A water tanker has been stationed at the Shell Garage for residents needing extra supplies.
