Hastings District Council and RoadSafe Hawke’s Bay are encouraging Hastings people to get behind their mayor, Lawrence Yule, and ride their bikes in the 2008 Mayoral Challenge.

Last year’s Mayoral Challenge, a family focussed fun-ride, saw 296 people cycling behind Lawrence Yule.

This year’s challenge takes place on Sunday 17 February and begins at the Splash Planet carpark at 9.30am.

Deborah Turner, Hastings District Councillor and cycling fan, said the theme for this year’s challenge was the letter ‘L’.

“We’re welcoming Lawrence’s larrikins, loonies, ladies, laddies, lamingtons, line-dancers, even lay-abouts. Get dressed up, get on your bike and get along to the biggest fun cycling event of the year,” said Cllr Turner.

The Mayoral Challenge is an annual event held as part of National Bikewise Week.

Spot prizes will be on offer.
