Saturday February 23 to Sunday March 2 2008 is Bike Wise Week.

This nationwide campaign, managed by Land Transport New Zealand with the support of the Ministry of Health, aims to encourage cycling for both transport and recreation.

The Bike Wise Business Battle is a free, fun competition that encourages organisations to compete against each other to see who can get the highest percentage of staff cycling during Bike Wise Week. It’s a great way to give cycling a go, win some great prizes and create a healthier, happier workplace! Registrations for the business battle which begins on Monday February 18 and ends on Sunday March 2 are now open. To register visit: www.bikewise.co.nz

Pip Hubbard from Sport Tararua is also encouraging people to take part in the Go By Bike Day on Wednesday February 27.

Despite being a rural community she believes that everyone in the region can be involved. “Being rural does not mean that we can’t play our part. Parking your car a good distance from the office and cycling the rest of the way or encouraging your kids to ride their bike to school are two good examples.”

Go By Bike Day also coincides with the start of iMove, a programme which encourages ditching the car and walking or cycling with your kids to school.

Laskey’s Auto Services will be providing FREE cycle checks on February 26 to ensure your cycle is safe and ready to go. Spot prizes will be given to children, and their parents spotted cycling to school on Go By Bike Day.
