The $2.5 million upgrade of Camp Street will resume from Monday, Queenstown Lakes District Council roading manager Ian Marshall said.

“In December we flagged the fact that the upgrade would continue after Waitangi day,” Mr Marshall said.

The upgrade was a major undertaking, creating one of the most desirable shopping and leisure locations in the country.

“In particular the streetscaping and information boards proposed on the Village Green and the pedestrian-friendly nature of the new street furniture, trees and paving will act as a draw card for visitors and locals alike,” Mr Marshall said.

Meanwhile, contractors had undertaken to do everything they could to ensure business as usual for retailers on the street, including the retention of business access at all times during trading hours.

Dust and noise would be minimised at all times and regular inspections would be carried out to ensure all care was being taken to minimise disruption and accommodate the passage of pedestrian traffic.

“A programme of the next phase of work was distributed to retailers and sent to property owners this week plus all contractors have agreed to establish a retail liaison role, with weekly updates for retailers. Ongoing open channels of communication with retailers and businesses on the street is essential, particularly given the intensity and duration of the work,” Mr Marshall said.

Camp Street would remain open to traffic, although at times one lane would be required.

“To minimise traffic and business disruption it has also been proposed to conduct up to 10 days of nightwork,” Mr Marshall said.

The programme for the upgrade was in three parts being a sewer and water mains upgrade through the centre of the road for the length of Camp Street, followed by the road reconstruction and the streetscaping.

“The plan is to complete the underground services then have the road reconstruction follow behind while the streetscaping is an ongoing effort. There will be a complete break for, Easter, the Winter Festival and the middle of winter,” Mr Marshall said.

The upgrade which would be undertaken in five street sections was scheduled to be completed by November
