Taupo District Council has recently completed a ‘State of the District’ report which has found that in general, community well-being appears to have improved since the 1990’s.

The report, which is now available to the public, says that the District is progressing well in a number of areas including employment, community spirit, perceived quality of life and improved health statistics. Reducing the number of motor vehicle crashes, affordable housing, criminal offending, and voter turnout are all areas identified for improvement.

TDC has produced the report to meet Council’s obligations under Section 92 of the Local Government Act to monitor and report on the progress toward achieving the Community Outcomes. The report outlines the overall state of each community outcome and the indicators/measures that are used to discover the state. The aim of the report is to inform decision-makers about community needs in the Taupo District and promote better application of resources in our community.

Councillor Andrew Welch, who participated in a community workshop on the State of the District said that he was pleased that this important piece of work was being undertaken. “It provides us a tool to measure where we are at and to identify what Council and the community need to build on to make the District a great place to live in the coming years.”

"Inter-agency communication and collaboration is an important factor in meeting community outcomes and improving community well-being. Council will continue to work with other agencies and strategic partners on ways it can facilitate or improve community outcomes,” he said.

The information in the report was gathered from a range of sources including Statistics New Zealand, Ministry of Health and District Health Board (DHB) administrative and survey data and the latest TDC Resident and Ratepayer Satisfaction Survey.

Copies of the report are available from the Taupo District Council offices and website.
