The rude awakenings have arrived.

The City Council informed the community in November last year that if there were noisy parties over the holiday period and into the new year, then staff would intervene.

The Council says intervention is necessary because of increasing complaints from the public which now range from six to 10 a night.

If a complaint is received the Council’s noise control officers investigate and remedy the situation. Their calls out range from a request for the household to reduce the noise or a formal instruction to cease it immediately. If this doesn’t occur the source of the noise (the stereo) is impounded.

To support the measure the Council has carried out a mail drop to “party” streets such as Ada and Linton Streets and is also alerting real estate agencies that handle rental properties and to the Property Owners Association.

The Head of Environmental Protection Services, Wayne Jameson, says residents don’t have to put up with noisy neighbours and so far the feed back from the mail drop has been positive.

“People are keen for us to take the initiative,” Wayne says.

“We first want to give residents the opportunity to take responsibility for their noise but, if they don’t, repeat infringement notices ranging from $500-$750 can be issued.”
