Metro use has surged in recent months. Figures are up 10 per cent for January over the previous year and five per cent for the six months to the end of 2007, compared to 2006. ECan public passenger transport committee chairwoman Cr Carole Evans says the usually slow month of January has had a makeover. “There has been a flurry of activity in the city, with people using the Metro buses to get the most out of the buskers, the beach and the beautiful Christchurch sunshine.”

This may be a response to increasing public awareness of ‘green’ issues such as reducing your carbon footprint. Christchurch Bus Services and Leopard Coachlines Ltd. are two Metro service operators who are currently trialling the use of a biodiesel blend in some of their buses, making catching the bus a sustainable solution to the ever- increasing price of petrol.

The Metro website reflects the rise in patronage, with more people logging onto Metroinfo.org.nz than ever. Figures indicate most are heading for the timetables and routes section, or checking out the journey planner to map where and when the bus leaves.

A new feature of the Metro website is its Student Diary. It follows 22- year- old student (Sophia) as she travels round Christchurch via bus, exploring the sights and getting to know the city. Sophia’s diary covers beaches, malls and the myriad of attractions Christchurch has to offer. Viewers are encouraged to provide feedback with ideas and suggestions by emailing Sophia@metroinfo.org.nz

Some responses to the diary have included members of the Sustainable Living Programme, who have held meetings onboard the Metro Orbiter. National coordinator Rhys Taylor says participants have been of a range of ages and seek to discuss sustainable transport options while riding the bus.

The latest City Council Summertimes promotion is also attracting keen bus patrons. Using the website and free maps, both locals and visitors can navigate their way to Summertimes events, music gigs and shows around the city.

“Christchurch’s Metro system is New Zealand’s top public transport system,” says Cr Evans. “The availability of the ‘real time’ system, the bus exchange and cost cutting Metrocards, our very own smart card, makes the Metro system stand out from the rest.”
