The number of entries for the 2007 House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are in and amongst the 675 entries nationwide are 66 entries from the Southern region. Sponsored by PlaceMakers and brought to you by the Registered Master Builders Federation, the awards programme, now in its 17th year, is likely to be the hottest yet!

Organisers are delighted with the number of entries from around the country which is as strong in number as last year’s record. Of the 20 regions, the Waikato area and Southern Region both showed a significant increase in entries, with 43% and 16% respectively up on last year.

Entries in the Commercial Project Awards are also up on last year, confirming that the new structure of the commercial awards introduced in 2006 has been embraced by the commercial building sector.

Amalgamated Builders (2001) Ltd, of Queenstown was the winner of the Seismic® Tourism and Leisure Commercial Project in the 2006 competition.

“We thought it was important to support our industry body awards, and we wanted to maximise exposure of what we thought was a special project and great team effort. The recognition that can be gained from success at the awards is significant and well worth the investment as it differentiates Master Builders from others in the industry.”

Registered Master Builders Federation chief executive Pieter Burghout says he’s looking forward to another great year for the well respected awards programme.

“The awards programme helps to raise the benchmark for quality in the building industry. It is hugely valuable to our members - and to the industry as a whole. Feedback from our members proves that the awards really set them apart from the rest. The programme continues to cement its reputation as the premier building awards programme in the country.”

PlaceMakers chief executive David Edwards agrees: “The House of the Year and RMB Commercial Project Awards are a great way to celebrate the quality and standard of building and construction in New Zealand, and we are proud to once again be the major supporter.”

The judging schedule is currently being finalised and the first round of regional judging begins at the end of April.

The awards are structured on two levels – regional and national. Gold, Silver and Bronze Award winners are determined in 20 regional events around New Zealand using a points-based system.

The top 100 local Gold Award winners become national finalists, announced on 8 August. These national finalists are then re-judged by a different panel of judges who determine the overall national winners.

The national winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on 27 October.
