Roy's Peak Track Open
The Upper Clutha Tracks Trust (UCTT) is excited to announce the completion of a new track that gives walking and mountain biking access from Wanaka township to the Roy’s Peak car park.
Having gained the support of the Wanaka Community Board, the Queenstown Lakes District Council constructed the 950 metre track that links the Millennium Track along the western shores of Lake Wanaka to the Matukituki Road just south of the Roy’s Peak car park.
“It’s a good result, it’s good to see another track open with others scheduled to start, it’s very encouraging,” WCB chairman Lyal Cocks said.
The new track means that people can now access Roy’s Peak along the foreshore from town to Waterfall Creek and then two kilometres along the Millennium Track – just beyond the lookout point – cut inland to the road. Previously, it was necessary to use the road for access which was neither a pleasant nor safe option.
“We have been working on this link track since well before the Trust was formed and are very happy that it is now a reality,” UCTT trustee John Wellington said, “This is just the sort of project the Trust advocates; any opportunity for increasing our walking and biking network is our business.”
The project, which cost $7,300 to complete, has involved negotiations between council, UCTT and adjoining landowners, with a very positive outcome, he said.
The UCTT further welcomes contact from anyone planning developments to discuss the district’s walking and cycling plans and how they can contribute.
