Construction of Huatoki Area Nearing
Tenders may be called soon for the construction of a new public area along the Huatoki Stream in New Plymouth’s CBD.
Tonight (Tuesday) New Plymouth District Council’s Policy Committee endorsed the design proposal for the area between Devon and Ariki streets, and recommended that the council approve the calling of tenders for construction.
The full council will consider the recommendation at its meeting on 4 March.
The design features, which were determined following public feedback on earlier concepts, include room for public events such as market days, and accessible ramps and terrace seating leading down to a small amphitheatre deck alongside the Huatoki Stream.
A high, large canopy with bubble skylights will create a gateway to the public space from Devon St, with eye-catching feature lighting drawing pedestrians through the area and trees installed for their shade.
If the full council approves the recommendation, it is anticipated that tenders will be advertised in March.
“We expect construction to start in April with the aim of having the entire area finished by Christmas,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.
“The area as it stands is a bit of an eyesore and it will be great to finally have this link between Devon St and Puke Ariki Landing completed for the public to enjoy.”
A few modifications have been made to the design since it was confirmed in August last year.
The construction of a retractable weir on the stream’s bed has been deferred, and the Devon St canopy has been modified so that it no longer overhangs the road. A boardwalk between Huatoki Lane and Ariki St on the west bank has been replaced with paved access on the east bank, which is of simpler construction and gives better access to the sun and stream views.
The project’s $3 million budget, spread over three years, was approved as part of the Community Plan 2006-2016.
