The number of young Wellingtonians taking part in the annual Pumpkin Patch KiwiTri is growing each year, making the children’s triathlon one of the biggest community sporting events in the city.

Wellington City Council's Sport and Recreation Portfolio Leader, Councillor John Morrison says the city's youngsters could make this the biggest KiwiTri yet.

"This triathlon is great fun for children to take part in and it will hopefully encourage them to stay active."

Registrations are now open for the triathlon for five to 12 year olds, which will be held at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, Kilbirnie on Sunday 16 March.

The KiwiTri involves a run, cycle and swim, and can be done individually or in teams of three. There are many different events with varying distances, depending on age, and there are both timed and non-timed events.

The run will be held at Kilbirnie Park, followed by the cycle leg along Evans Bay Parade and Cobham Drive and the swim at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.

Entry is $8 per child, $20 for a team of three, or $10 for the adult/child relay, which consists of a run and swim. Pre-registrations close on Sunday 9 March and entries will also be accepted on the day.

Each participant will receive an official Pumpkin Patch KiwiTri certificate. Lots of great spot prizes will be given away on the day, including two bikes from Burkes Cycles.

Children of all abilities are encouraged to take part. Contact us for more information and details of requirements for those with special needs.

Participants can pick up an enrolment form from local Pumpkin Patch stores, Council libraries, swimming pools, recreation and service centres, or phone the Council's KiwiTri line on 801 4479. Information is also available on the Council's recreation website, www.feelinggreat.co.nz

The following roads will be closed during the KiwiTri:

Evans Bay Parade (between Cobham Drive and Kemp Street) from 7am until 3pm and Cobham Drive (between Evans Bay Parade and Troy Street) from 10.00am until 3.00pm.
