Lord Mayor calls on our young people to participate in World Youth Forum
Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has encouraged young people from cities throughout the Asia Pacific region to apply to participate in the 2007 Asia Pacific Cities Summit to be held in Brisbane in September 2007.
Councillor Newman said Brisbane City Council was searching for 100 suitably qualified young people to represent their generation at the Summit.
“Young people contribute socially and economically to our cities and their opinions and views on the future should be represented at this Summit,†Cr Newman said.
“The theme is ‘Renewing Asia Pacific Cities’, and young people will be instrumental in this renewal process over the next 20 years.
“For the first time in the Summit’s history, we are calling for young people who are interested in shaping their cities’ future to rub shoulders with political and business leaders from across the Asia Pacific, and to present their ideas and vision for the future,†Cr Newman said.
The Asia Pacific Cities Summit will incorporate a Youth Forum, which has been designed by a group of young people working with Council’s youth team, to ensure it will be fun and relevant for the younger delegates.
Youth delegates and our future leaders will participate in the main Summit, as well as plenary sessions and workshops alongside with their youth counterparts from across the Asia Pacific region.
The opportunity is open to all young emerging leaders, aged between 16 and 25, who have a desire to contribute to their local communities.
Young people interested in participating can download an application at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/apcs by clicking on the youth link, or phone Brisbane City Council on 3403 8888.
The Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS) is held biennially, the host city alternating between Brisbane and the bidding cities from the Asia Pacific. This year’s Summit is being held in Brisbane from 31 August to 3 September.
The Asia Pacific region includes East Asia (Japan, China and Korea), South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, the west coasts of the USA and Canada, Central America, and the west coast of South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile).
