The $2.5 million Camp Street upgrade is progressing ahead of schedule,” Queenstown Lakes District Council roading manager Ian Marshall said.

Installation of the sewer pipe, which preceded the road reconstruction, footpath and streetscaping work would move to the narrowest section of Camp Street next week.

“Due to the depth of the trench that needs to be dug for the sewer pipe, and the narrow nature of the road there will be safety issues to manage while this short section (between Cow Lane and Shotover Street) is completed,” Mr Marshall said.

The contractor (Delta) had no choice but to close one short section of Camp Street while the pipe was laid Monday to Thursday, next week.

“We will ensure goods and service delivery vehicles can still access premises. For normal traffic it means taking alternate routes via Shotover and Rees Streets. Traffic will be able to turn left from Ballarat Street into Camp and then Earl and Church Streets

“The temporary road closure of a small section of Camp Street will reduce the construction time greatly in this area,” Mr Marshall said.

Mr Marshall reminded the community that a small part of the carriageway might be closed but shops and businesses were very much open for trading.

“We are erecting signage to remind locals and visitors that Camp Street is very much open,” he said.

Meanwhile Fulton Hogan was due to start work back at the corner of Camp and Earl Streets in the week commencing March 10.

The sub-contractor, Turnbull Developments was progressing well along the footpath outside St James apartments.
