Prime Minister Helen Clark has launched a New Zealand company which heralds further competition in the rapidly changing telecommunications market.

VentureVoIP Ltd, a Dunedin-based company which promises to change the culture of communication through its internet-based exchange, had the backing of the Prime Minister when she officiated at the launch yesterday (10/5/07).

“It is great to see this new New Zealand owned and operated business taking advantage of the reformed telecommunications environment,” said Helen Clark. She compared the revolution in communications technology to the advent of refrigerated shipping in its effect on the export market.

“It’s important that the regulatory framework around telecommunications supports ICT innovation, rather than obstructing it,” she added.

VentureVoIP Ltd offers significantly reduced costs for telephone calls, as well as allowing the convergence of different media through its service. Audio and video conferencing, and even streaming media, are available through its innovative and locally designed product ConduIT3.

Chairman of the Board of VentureVoIP Ltd, Ian Lamb, said in his opening remarks: “We are here to announce the future of telecommunications and give everyone a small taste of it. These are revolutionary times, and we believe VentureVoIp is the advance party for a culture shift in the way people communicate.”

The new service is already up and running, and the company reports a flood of customers rushing to subscribe, some expressing gratitude that they now have an alternative to Telecom.
