Cleaner Franklin Support High But More Action Needed
Franklin District Council has been greatly encouraged by the response to the Cleaner Franklin campaign over the last few months. However, Franklin’s graffiti vandalism removal bill continues to increase at an alarming rate and more ratepayer’s money is having to be directed toward this.
“Council has received some great feedback, interest in the Business Supporter programme and good interest from volunteers wanting to be involved,” says Franklin District Council’s Community Partnerships Support Officer, Raewyn Barlow.
“We understand that some people, in some situations, need help from Franklin District Council to remove graffiti vandalism; however a major part of the Cleaner Franklin campaign is to create an understanding that this is a community problem that needs a community solution.”
The Cleaner Franklin website, www.cleanerfranklin.co.nz, has a range of tips on how to remove graffiti and deter graffiti vandals from seeing your home or business as a good target. Some of these include:
Try Detergent i.e. dishwashing liquid to remove the graffiti
A solvent such as paint thinner, methylated spirits, or oven cleaner may remove the graffiti. BUT REMEMBER: these are hazardous chemicals, wear gloves and store away from children
Sanding or water blasting. Water blasting can be particularly effective on unpainted surfaces. Please remember however that excessive sand or water blasting can damage surfaces
A painted wall is easier to keep graffiti free because you can paint over it. Paint your wall or fence in dark colours and buy extra paint to keep for painting over graffiti.
Plant a hedge, some shrubs, or put a hanging plant or big pot plant in front of your fence or wall
Increase visibility at night. Lights with motion sensors are good for this
Purchase a graffiti protection paint to apply to your fence or targeted area
