Council extends subsidised nappy scheme
A Christchurch City Council scheme to subsidise the cost of washable nappies has been extended for another month because of growing public interest.
Last November, Council began offering a $20 subsidy on the cost of trial packs of washable nappies in a bid to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
The scheme was to end on March 31 but has been extended until the end of April because of its success and growing public awareness of the need to reduce, recycle, reuse and recover material from waste.
The average family can save between $600 and $1800 by using washable nappies.
By its end, it is forecast that 2300 families will have taken advantage of the subsidy to buy washable nappies.
“That’s a great result and should cut out the amount of rubbish households using disposables currently put out by up to 60%,†says Council Network Planning Team Leader Simon Collin.
The promotion is funded by the Council’s Community Waste Minimisation Scheme. Following the trial period, the Council will conduct a survey of all those that purchased the trial packs, to allow it to assess the community’s opinion on them.
