Take Part in Making Art at Toi Poneke
Wellingtonians are invited to join an interactive exhibition at Toi Poneke from Thursday 13 March while a group of installation artists transform the gallery into their own giant workbook.
The group from the Inverlochy Art School will show their works-in-progress, from workbooks and sketches to as-yet unfinished sculptures in an exhibition called Workbook 2.
The curator of the exhibition and group's tutor, Margaret Feeney says she hopes people will return to the gallery throughout its month-long duration to take part and also check on the changing nature of the "material trail of investigation".
"It really is about the process of making the work rather than displaying the finished product," she says. "We would love it if people came along to take part and went away inspired and confident enough to take up their own work."
The group of installation artists include: Anja Stoldt, Doris Lindstrom, Helen Reynolds and Katherine Joyce-Kellaway.
Margaret says there is a playful and spontaneous tone to the exhibition, where the focus is on the improvisation and evolution of ideas, rather than on the end product.
"Right from the opening night, people can add drawings to some of the projects, contribute to paper sculptures, become part of a cultural network installation, or even immerse themselves in a cocoon of beautiful fabrics for a moment of peaceful sensory elimination. There are so many things that people can see, make and experience."
"And because the installations will be constantly changing over time, we welcome photographers to do their own assignments by coming along and documenting the changes to the gallery," she adds.
Workbook 2 opens at 5.30pm on Thursday 13 March and runs until Friday 4 April at Toi PÃ…Âneke Gallery, 61-63 Abel Smith Street. The artists will be working at the gallery and available to help the public join in the work every weekday from 2-3.00pm and on Saturdays between 10.00am and 2.00pm.
