Tararua’s current lack of water is hampering the council’s ability to lift fire restrictions despite the more favourable indices reading and some recent rain.

“But we are not out of the woods yet,” warns Tararua Principal Rural Fire Officer Noel Mingins.

“Conditions have left our water supplies so low that fire suppression in any particular area could not yet be guaranteed,” Mr Mingins said.

“This all means that the Tararua District Council will not be lifting the restriction at the present time.”

Permit applications are still required 48 hours ahead of the proposed burn off and should be lodged at the council’s service centres.

Mr Mingins said the council was “extremely grateful” for residents’ efforts to ensure “that our environment has remained free of fire in the dangerous conditions that have prevailed in recent months.”
