Sea Wall Work Starts Next Week
Work to improve the effectiveness of the sea wall along part of the Coastal Walkway will begin this Monday (17 March).
A section of the boulder wall between Te Henui Stream and the Woolcombe Tce cliffs will be widened so that it is more effective at breaking up the force of the incoming sea.
“The new shape of the sea wall in this area will disperse the sea’s energy more effectively and make it less likely to be damaged during storms,” says Manager Projects Team Jeff Bondy.
“It’s the same principle that we employed in modifying the section of boulder wall in front of the Woolcombe Tce cliffs late last year.
“We’ll also be doing further work along the toe of the Woolcombe Tce section during this time.”
The project is scheduled for completion by 15 April. The Coastal Walkway from beneath Placemakers through to the playground next to Te Henui Stream will be closed to the public from Monday to Friday during business hours, and on a few nights until 7.30pm.
“Some days will have very low tides that will enable the contractors to work for an extended period of time,” says Mr Bondy. “Right now we’re looking at reopening the walkway at 7.30pm on 20 March and 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10 April, conditions allowing.
“But in the evenings and on weekends and public holidays, this section of the walkway will be open as usual.
“We just ask people to take note of the barriers and stay out of this section of the walkway when work is taking place, for their own safety.”
