The bridge over the Mangaone Stream on Flygers Line has been closed until further notice.

Following a routine inspection today the Council has detected a transverse crack on the deck above the pier and Roading Manager, Graeme Tong, says his staff is sufficiently concerned that they have closed the road until a detailed structural investigation can take place next week.

“We want to be cautious over Easter so have closed the bridge until we can investigate it further after Easter,” Graeme Tong says.

The bridge underwent major foundations improvements following the 2004 February floods and, at the time, the decking was also closely inspected.

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the bridge could reopen following repairs or it could require a major upgrade. In which case it would remain closed for a period of time.

In the meantime Graeme Tong advises motorists to use either John F Kennedy Drive or the Kairanga/Bunnythorpe Road. The road close doesn’t affect access to any property.
